As much as I swore I wouldn’t buy another Intel PC, it’s hard to imagine using anything other than a Thinkpad, so when Lenovo added Core 2 Duo chips to their Thinkpad line, I had to take a look, and here’s what I priced up:

PC Concept – Chimera Media Center
My next project PC is planned out, now I only have to work on how to fund it.
The project is a MythTV based media center. It uses a low profile media case from Silverstone, an ASUS motherboard, and a low end AMD processor. I chose this particular case because it features an integrated IR receiver and includes a remote control. It also offers Linux drivers for the front VFD display and remote control, which came as a pleasant suprise. The ASUS motherboard includes a TV-OUT bracket with Hi Definition TV out as well as standard and S-Video TV out, in addition to DVI out on the motherboard itself. The only problem is that the PCI riser card included with the case will not line up with the ASUS motherboard, so a PCI cable from mini-itx.com will be used. The last piece of hardware to take note of is the CPU. I have chosen a Sempron 64 2800+, which is AMD’s extreme bottom-of-the-line CPU. The reason for this is that my TV tuner cards use hardware encoding, so the CPU is not needed for video encoding. Eventually, I will upgrade the CPU to an Athlon 64 X2 3600+, which is currently not yet available.

The new Thinkpad T60p
So close, and yet so far…
Thinkpads have always been extremely Linux-friendly, and I’m typing this on my Thinkpad R51. Lenovo’s newest Thinkpad, the T60p, uses Intel’s new Core Duo processor, which is the succesor to the Pentium M. The T60p’s specs (for the high-end model) are as follows:

I need money…
As you may be aware, Intel recently released their new line of processors: the Core Duo. Already, notebook manufacturers are offering laptops with these new processors, and with the new Nvidia Go 7-series graphics cards, I can’t wait to see what these new machines can do.

My Brand New Computer
While cleaning out my grandparents house, I stumbled upon an old Macintosh computer from 1984. The specs? 7.8MHz and 128K of RAM. The computer has no hard drive, but has two 400K floppy drives (in other words, each floppy can only hold 400K of data, versus the 1.44M that modern day floppies hold). So far, I have determined that the processor is too old to even run Linux (the processor has been around since before Linux was created, and lacks an MMU) however, I may be able to run an older version of UNIX on it. The other option is to gut the case and build another computer, such as my Mac Mini, into the case, but this seems like a waste of a perfectly good old computer. So, I’ll probably wind up looking for an Operating System or building one from scratch. Hopefully, I can install a hard drive into it. If I can, chances are it will only take a SCSI drive, and I happen to have a 1gig SCSI drive at home, so I’ll give that a try later.
