Good news for Atheros users

The problem with Atheros cards in Hardy seems to have been resolved.  I’ve built debs from the bzr branch of NetworkManager, which will become network-manager_0.6.6-0ubuntu2 (0ubuntu1 is the current version), and my wireless internet works again.

So, while the fix is currently unreleased, it should be out soon.

Wireless Breakage

I’ve been having trouble with my wireless networking under Hardy.  I’m using a Thinkpad R51 with an Atheros wireless card, and Network Manager 0.6.6 doesn’t want to work with it.

Aside from that, Hardy is looking to be a nice release.

State of the Elections

So, Hillary managed to pull out a few wins on Tuesday.  I’m not particularly worried, she only netted 4 delegates, and that’s not taking into account the Texas caucuses, which Obama is currently winning.

However, I felt like putting this in writing somewhere, so I’ll go through with it:

If Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination, I’m leaving the party.

Should the Democrats choose to elect Hillary, then their interests and values will have shifted far enough away from mine that I’ll re-register as an Independent.  Barack Obama is everything I could ask for in a president, and I truly hope that I have a chance to vote for him this November.

Going Live with Ubuntu 8.04

I’ve installed Ubuntu “Hardy Heron” Alpha 6 on my laptop, and I’ve been using it for the last couple of days.  So far, it works rather well, although I’ve had a few issues.

One problem that has finally gone away is the problem connecting to UofL’s network.  I can now connect to the wireless network using NetworkManager, though it turns out I may have been able to do so under Gutsy as well.

Firefox 3.0 has been giving me some trouble as well, and I’ve just installed Firefox 2 alongside it in the meantime.  Besides not working with Foxmarks, which is a must for me, FF3b3 has been having a number of weird rendering errors.

I love the improvements to Gnome.  GVFS is very nice, and makes multiple transfers a lot less cluttered.  Supposedly, there’s some stability issues, but I’ve yet to encounter them.  The world clock in the calender applet is also  very nice, as it lets me monitor the time and weather in multiple cities at a glance.  This may be useful next semester if I get a co-op position out of town.

Cautious Optimism

Tomorrow, voters in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Vermont will go to the polls to vote for the Democratic nominee for president.  Just now, am I starting to let myself believe that Obama may be able to win these states, with poll numbers coming close between them.  Weeks earlier, Hillary was highly favored in these races, but now they’re practically tied, which really goes to show the momentum that Obama has been building.  With some luck, the race may be decided tomorrow, all that’s left is to wait and see.
